Meeting with the Audit Committee of the European Parliament

On Thursday, the 30^th of January, a delegation from Metropolitan Community Clinic at Helliniko took part in a meeting with the audit committee of the European Parliament studying the activities and the consequences of the Troikas’ policy towards Greece and the commitments made by our country under the memoranda. 

The Metropolitan Community Clinic at Helliniko was one of four volunteer organizations invited to participate.  Our people tried – in a very limited time – to explain the tragic consequences that the memoranda have had on our public health system – to the point of excluding altogether most of the uninsured citizens from it. 

We submitted to the committee facts as evidence of this including our interview by the BBC “In Sickness and in Debt” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rkKhwg0EPM) which staggered audiences in Britain in the summer of 2013.

What we concluded after all this was that the visiting committee does not “control” much since the French parliamentary representative, Liem Hoang Ngoc said quite clearly in front of everyone – including other members of the European Parliament, “Our committee is not here to evaluate the social consequences of Troika’s  policies, but we will communicate your comments to the appropriate committee.” Needless to say, we were aghast since going to the meeting was not our own idea – we had been invited.
